The American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers – Initial Certification Course is the entry-level instructor-led training that teaches healthcare professionals the foundational lifesaving skills they need to respond to cardiopulmonary emergencies. Below is a detailed explanation of what the course includes, who it’s for, how it’s delivered, and how certification works.

Purpose & Audience

  • The course is intended for healthcare professionals and others (nurses, physicians, EMTs/paramedics, respiratory therapists, medical students, etc.) who are expected to respond to cardiac, respiratory, or airway emergencies in clinical or prehospital settings. cpr.heart.org+2cpr.heart.org+2

  • It establishes the baseline cardiorespiratory emergency response skills (such as CPR, ventilations, AED use, and choking relief) that ACLS, PALS, and other advanced courses build upon. cpr.heart.org+1

Core Content & Skills Taught

In the initial BLS course, participants learn and practice:

  • High-quality chest compressions: correct rate, depth, allowing full chest recoil, minimal interruptions cpr.heart.org+1

  • Ventilation / rescue breathing: using barrier devices, bag-valve mask techniques, and basic airway management cpr.heart.org+2cpr.heart.org+2

  • Use of an AED (automated external defibrillator): when and how to deploy it in adult, child, and infant victims cpr.heart.org+1

  • Single-rescuer and team CPR for adults, children, and infants (one rescuer / two rescuer techniques) showmecpr.com+1

Course Format & Delivery Options

The BLS Initial course can be offered in different formats:

  • Instructor-led (classroom): participants attend lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on practice with manikins under supervision. cpr.heart.org+1

  • Blended / eLearning + skills session (HeartCode® BLS): participants complete the didactic portion online, then attend an in-person skills session to demonstrate competencies. cpr.heart.org+1

  • In some places, because of safety protocols (e.g. during COVID), portions of the content may be delivered virtually or via a hybrid method (online lecture portion followed by in-class skills) Heart CPR

Assessment & Certification

  • Participants must demonstrate hands-on skills competence (manikin practice, scenario drills) to the instructor’s satisfaction. showmecpr.com+1

  • Often there is a written or knowledge test (multiple choice or open book) to ensure understanding of key principles. showmecpr.com

  • After successfully completing both the cognitive and psychomotor requirements, participants receive an AHA BLS Provider Course Completion Card (or eCard), which is valid for two years. cpr.heart.org+1
